Simon Penson, a spokesperson for kitchen design advice website My Next Kitchen, said that the environmentally-friendly credentials of kitchen design are becoming more important.

"Although the whole kitchen is getting a revamp in most of the houses, there are certain ideas that are being stressed upon. One of the leading of these is the concept of green kitchen," he said.

"The last year has seen every area of life going green. As a result green kitchen seems to be quite the in thing. As far as going green is concerned, it is the kitchen appliances which are the thrust areas here."

Efficient kitchen appliances can save people money on electricity bills, so it has a monetary benefit as well as helping the environment.

Leigh, who writes for UKTV's Home website, mentioned both colour and light while writing an article giving advice on kitchen design solutions for people with not much space.

The journalist recommends using a white or neutral colour scheme, as this will make the space appear bigger than it actually is.

"Choose a monochromatic colour scheme made up from different tones of the same colour to make furniture appear less prominent [and] keep as much natural light as possible and use plenty of ambient and task lighting," she wrote.

"You can make a narrow, corridor-like kitchen feel more square by painting the two shorter walls in a slightly darker tone."
