'Vintage and utilitarian' kitchens are in ★★★★★

Published on: 18/06/2010White kitchenPeople embarking on kitchen design projects might like to note that one writer believes this year's big trend to be "vintage and utilitarian" spaces.

According to the Guardian's Susie Steiner, this style is meant to portray the creativity of its owners, as opposed to their abject wealth - unlike the kitchens of the 80s and 90s.

She came up with a few suggestions to help those making use of online kitchen planners replicate the look.

Firstly, white metro tiles were recommended as being "essential" to any industrial eating space - "and they're cheap as chips, too".

Painted floorboards were also suggested as they can be easily coordinated with other elements and are "stylish, in a Scandinavian sort of way", while factory lighting - complete with giant metal shades - could be hung over the kitchen table.

However, anyone after a more contemporary kitchen might like to follow Kathryn Weber of the Victoria Advocate's advice, who recently noted that Asian influences are hot right now.
