Poor kitchen design could be leading to food wastage

Poor kitchen design could be behind the fact that Britons are hoarding a collective £297 million worth of gone-off food in their homes.

While many UK households are currently looking to cut back on their spending, research carried out by One Poll for My Kitchen Table, has revealed that many are nevertheless guilty of large amounts of waste, with poor kitchen design and a lack of organisation potentially to blame.

The study found that the typical UK household has nine out-of-date food items in its kitchen, more often than not hidden in the back of old-style kitchen units, with mixed spices, custard powder and soup among the items most likely to be purchased and then forgotten about.

"By letting these ingredients go forgotten and run past their sell-by date, we are wasting a lot of money and food," said a spokesperson for the cookery company.

Despite neglecting the contents of their cupboards Britons still regard the kitchen as the 'heart of their homes', interior design expert Mary Jo Peterson said earlier this month.
