Bring industrial style into a traditional kitchen

Homeowners don't have to have a modern kitchen in order to adopt the increasingly popular industrial look.

According to interior designer Emily Henderson, it's a trend that can be incorporated into traditional kitchens as well.

Speaking to the Canadian Press, she explained that the industrial look is all about creating utilitarian workspaces.

Common elements include exposed brick walls, cement floors, rolling carts and industrial-style lighting.

Ms Henderson said the trick to making industrial decor work in a traditional kitchen is to choose more of the wooden industrial pieces than the metal.

And the more mis-matched the wood tones, the better, she insisted.

"The huge contrast between industrial and traditional is what makes it work," the expert claimed.

"Trying to make everything match colour-wise or wood tone-wise can actually do you a disservice."

However, fellow designer Betsy Burnham said it is important that the kitchen doesn't contrast too sharply with the rest of the home.

"The last thing you want to do is walk into a colonial house and have one room look like an East Village loft and the others looking like Colonial Williamsburg," she explained.
